What is Unix Epoch Time & The Year 2038 Bug?
Unix time (also known as POSIX time or Epoch time) represents the number of seconds that have elapsed since the Unix epoch: Midnight, January 1, 1970 (UTC), excluding leap seconds. It is used across databases, filesystems, operating systems, and network protocols as a timezone-independent temporal benchmark.
The Year 2038 Problem (Y2038)
Many legacy 32-bit systems store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer (time_t). The maximum value that can be represented by a signed 32-bit integer is:
2³¹ - 1 = 2,147,483,647 seconds
This maximum timestamp corresponds to Tuesday, January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. At the next second, 32-bit systems will suffer integer overflow, wrapping around to negative numbers (-2,147,483,648), causing systems to interpret the date as December 13, 1901. Modern 64-bit platforms utilize 64-bit integers, which will not overflow for roughly 292 billion years.
