YAML ↔ JSON Converter & Validator
Two-way client-side converter between YAML configuration files and JSON data structures with syntax linting and formatting.
⚡ Quick Rule:
YAML is a human-readable superset of JSON based on indentation (spaces, never tabs). JSON uses explicit curly braces
{} and double quotes. In Kubernetes and Docker Compose, converting YAML to JSON lets you validate syntax and query payloads using tools like jq.

YAML vs. JSON: Differences and Cloud Engineering Use Cases
Both YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language) and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) are widely used data serialization standards. While they represent the same data hierarchies (maps, lists, and scalar types), they serve distinct engineering purposes in cloud infrastructure.
| Feature / Dimension | YAML | JSON |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Purpose | Human-authored configurations (Kubernetes, Ansible, Docker, CI/CD). | Machine-to-machine API data exchange and database storage (MongoDB, PostgreSQL JSONB). |
| Structural Syntax | Whitespace indentation (2 spaces standard; tabs strictly forbidden). | Explicit delimiters: braces {}, brackets [], and colons. |
| Comments Support | Native line comments supported using #. |
No comments permitted by RFC 8259 specification. |
| Parsing Speed | Slower due to indentation tracking and complex scalar inference. | Extremely fast, compiled natively into browser V8 and operating system runtimes. |
| String Quoting | Optional for basic strings; quotes required for special characters or reserved keywords. | Strictly mandatory double quotes for all keys and strings. |
Common YAML Indentation Pitfalls to Avoid
- The Tab Taboo: YAML parsers strictly disallow tab characters (
\t) for indentation. Always configure your editor to insert 2 spaces per indentation level. - Type Coercion Gotchas (Norway Problem): In YAML 1.1, the unquoted string
NO(country code for Norway) is coerced into the booleanfalse. Always quote country codes and string scalars ("NO","yes","on","off"). - List Item Alignment: When defining arrays of objects under a key, indent the hyphen
-two spaces beneath the parent key:spec: containers: - name: web-app image: nginx:latest
