Understanding Server Electricity & Energy Metrics

When running servers, home labs, or mining equipment 24/7/365, electricity cost often exceeds the original purchase price of the hardware over its lifetime. Calculating true running costs requires accounting for utility rates and cooling overhead.

The Kilowatt-Hour (kWh) Formula

Utility companies bill in kilowatt-hours. The formula to calculate energy consumption is:

kWh = (Power in Watts × Hours Per Day) ÷ 1,000

For example, a 180W enterprise server running 24 hours per day consumes 4.32 kWh daily, or roughly 1,577 kWh annually.

What is PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness)?

PUE is the standard industry metric measuring data center energy efficiency, established by The Green Grid:

PUE = Total Facility Energy ÷ IT Equipment Energy

A PUE of 1.0 represents a 100% efficient system where every watt goes directly into computing hardware. In reality, HVAC cooling, UPS conversion losses, and PDUs push typical data center PUE to between 1.2 and 1.5.
